You’ve pulled off the highway onto a gravel service road, which ends several kilometers before you reach the worksite. It’s snowing. The white stuff is coming down hard and fast. You can’t see where the gravel ends and the frozen mud and ice begin. But it’s all good. You’re driving a Silverado equipped with the Autotrac TM 4x4 system. Which means the only thing that’s slipped has been the fact you can manually control your four-wheel drive system. And the only switch you’ve flipped since going off-road has been your wipers. The next-generation in traction control for today’s four-wheel driver, Autotrac provides intelligent traction in variable road conditions. Design improvements to the Autotrac system’s transfer case don’t just mean greater convenience. You won’t, for example, find a Silverado driver out in the cold fiddling with manual locking hubs - because there are none. The new and improved transfer case also contains a control module that analyses road and off-road conditions. So for example, if you accidentally selected the wrong drive approach for the terrain, the control module over-rides the request. The transfer case control module also records any faults in the system, making diagnostics quick and easy. The Autotrac transfer case delivers power precisely where and when it’s needed. You don’t need to do anything when the switch on the dash is set to the “Auto” position. Got only two tires in contact with the ground? No problem. The onboard microprocessor detects low traction and transfers just enough power to the front wheels for better handling and steering control. At the end of the day, innovations to the Autotrac system mean improved power efficiency and lower fuel consumption. Which means getting your payload from A to B is cheaper and safer. Autotrac has four drive modes to choose from (plus neutral for vehicle towing on all four wheels), allowing you to navigate through whatever conditions you find yourself in. 2HI: For normal driving conditions, 2HI locks out the front drive shaft and uses rear-wheel drive for the best fuel economy. 4HI: For limited off-road use and slippery situations such as deep snow or ice, 4HI engages front and rear drive shafts simultaneously, and eliminates speed differential for added traction and control. 4LO: For extreme conditions such as deep sand, mud or difficult off-road terrain, 4LO increases torque to a ratio of 2.72:1. AUTO 4x4: For situations such as the one described above, where traction is unknown and conditions variable, AUTO 4x4 puts 4x4 on standby and will engage it as needed. You don’t have to adjust for conditions, noise is reduced and fuel is economised. |
